the Refrain

It truly is amazing to think about how far you can think you have come in this process of being transformed into Love. But then, given the right slapdash of circumstance; Usually just sitting in the idle of winds that can so easily change our Holy momentum, you find that you are,  just as God found you, capable of anything for good or evil.

No mistake, you have been made anew! You’re made this way by a King who doesn’t need you, but wants you more than anything you’ve ever wanted. He would die for you. He did die for you. And now all He wants to do is take care of you. He asks for homage simply because it’s the best thing for you…to follow Him in everything you do.

It’s a great and long proposal how this King chases.

He even plays to our old ways in the hopes of commandeering, while entirely capable and entitled to laying siege to us. Think about it…If you were all about you before you met God and you wanted to make sure you got yours, you could technically ride those formerly meant-for-evil desires of selfishness, and still choose the best thing for you now: Jesus!

Jesus: the most righteously selfish choice to be made.

Why we ever choose to bend before an influence that lends to anything short of or away from God is beyond me.

Nothing should be more evidence that the Enemy is a failure than the fact that his very best leaves us at our very worst. He is backwards Father, who has only raised lies.

I thank you Jesus that you have shared your heart with me recently in such a way that I was met with a heavy hammer that specializes in the shattering of defective hearts and the remodeling of intimacies lost.

The Devil tells me,

Your past is filled with so many mistakes.

Cursed are those who have gone astray.

Lost are those who can’t abide.

He’s right. Hallelujah, he’s right!

It is this way the Devil preaches. He preaches over me and age-old song as he sets in to tear and defeat at my very soul, destroying progress and infecting promises made. He preaches identical sermons to God. He is the great mimic. But the Devil omits the ending, which does not favor his plan. He goes quiet when the Heaven’s were peeled back and roared with affection. He has forgotten the refrain: Jesus Saves!

I never thought I would call the Devil one of my favorite preachers, but there it is. Every time I am assaulted and courted by his threnody, selling themselves as sermons, I am reminded of the final chapter, of the Great swell on the horizon that brings the tides of change, ready to wash all anew. Every time the Devil points the finger at our past, he inevitably, accidentally, detrimentally, points us toward Jesus.

It’s time for the imperfect to rise and begin to rule over this world as instructed…as entrusted. Time to live not in fear, but as though we are to command Angels in the not-too-far-away future.

Time to commandeer the greatest threat ever posed against us and use what was once meant for evil, now for Go(o)d. When you, against your better judgment, against your righteous selfishness and even against your made new ways  find yourself delving in the Devil’s archives, remember, He cannot begin any of his sermons without God finishing it forever… unless you allow him the luxury.

May the Great Refrain sweep across this land. May it brazen ahead of me to Ireland this summer. May it desperately entangle the hearts of the city I currently call home. And may this Mighty Refrain, the  name of Jesus, and the saving of all mankind, fill every cranny of your quietest thoughts and every scream of your craziest storm…Echoing dearly from your most belligerent moments to those most benevolent: ideally finding them one in the same.

God has no potential for He is already perfect.

My prayer for you as well as myself is such…

May He adorn us with the realization that we have everything already at our fingertips to move this world to Love, pick a fight with all that stands against that, and in our own hearts, trust and follow a God who does not need to explain Himself to us.

About justingunter

I'm recently 29 years old, recently married and ready to change the world for God. He has called me to be a missionary! This means more than just changing zip codes and living in countries where I struggle (for a while) speaking the language the locals dream in. It means a lifestyle of sacrifice, audacious Hope and above all, a desire for Jesus simply because He is who He is. I moved to Franklin, TN in October 15th of 2012 and expect this to be the first of many changes for the great calling on the Gunter's life. Side note...I dig being married. It helps when you're married the best woman ever! Teale and I feel called to plant churches, combat sex trafficking and be a place of refuge and Holy sojourn to all who would seek to join alongside us for good or for a season. For now, Ol' Rocky Top is our home, Zoey is our Great Dane and we, the Gunters, love Jesus with all we have.

  1. Thank you for this post… It is true that the devil can point us back to Jesus. He does it unconsciously and without realizing that he does it. Jesus is truly unexplainable but also at the same time undeniable. No one can deny Jesus and though sometimes we turn away he is always back with us.
